What's Tea Tree Oil and Why It's Used for Treating Eczema?

Tea tree oil is a type of essential oil that can be used to rejuvenate the skin cells. Essential oils are usually extracted by a distillation process and have odour of the source from which they're extracted. Tea tree oil is extracted from Melaleuca alternifolia that is a species of the tree found in Australia. It's one of the best home remedies for eczema.

Tea tree oil can be mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil or olive oil. Mix 12 drops of tea tree oil in 30 ml of carrier oil; massage this mixture on the scalp for a few minutes. Apply it regularly and wash hair with a shampoo that suits the scalp's skin. 

Tea tree oil has healing properties and it soothes the itchy scalp. It can also be used as a conditioner. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil mixture after hair wash, wash it again with water or leave it on the hair then let it dry. It may help in making better scalp condition and heal itchiness and dryness that is caused by eczema. Tea tree oil anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties attack the fungus and assist Seborrhoeic eczema to clear up.

Tea Tree Oil for Eczema on Face/Feet/Hands:

Tea tree oil can be used on Eczema on face/ hands/ feet but needs to be diluted. Make a bottle of 30 ml mixture of carrier oil and tea tree oil and apply it daily after a face wash or on a clean face. The same procedure is applied to hands and feet. It makes the skin better and rejuvenates it by its healing properties. It also cures nail fungus.

Since eczema is mostly caused by dry skin, apply this mixture several times a day will help. Also, try not to use soap because soaps are alkaline in nature and tend to make skin more dryer. Instead of soap, use a mild cleanser and there are tea tree oil face wash, toner, shampoo and moisturisers available in the market that gives soothing effects on the skin. Never wash face with hot water as it can trigger eczema; always use tepid water. Although tea tree oil is one of the best home remedies for eczema, face skin is sensitive as compared to other parts of the body, stop using it in case of any side effects.

Tea Tree Oil for Eczema in Ears:

Tea tree oil helps with treating eczema on the body and some also use it to ease ear infection symptoms but it may damage the inner ear. Apply tea tree oil mixture to the outer ear eczema and always use diluted tea tree oil.

Tea Tree Oil and Vaseline:

A mixture of tea tree oil and Vaseline can be used as a daily moisturiser. Add one or two drops of tea tree oil in a pinch of Vaseline and apply several times on the affected area daily. Vaseline itself doesn't help with the healing process of eczema but smooths cracked and dry skin. Tea tree oil helps with healing and together they work wonderfully.

Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil:

Both essential oils are quite good at treating eczema. Lavender oil has extraordinary anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. It may help in killing bacteria and can fight infections. It just not only cleanse the skin but also reduces irritation.

As both are essential oils so it's better to mix them with a carrier oil to avoid any side effects. Mix 6 drops of tea tree oil and 6 drops of lavender oil in 30 ml carrier oil. For a better result, use it daily as required.

Tea Tree Oil Bath for Eczema:

Bath can make eczema worse and it's not easy to take a bath when the skin is eczema-prone. There are a few measures that can be taken to avoid making eczema worse. Avoid using bath soaps as they make skin dryer and irritated. Also, bath water temperature should not be hot or cold, it's best to have tepid water. Use bath products that are made for eczema-prone skin. Add 10-15 drops of pure Tea tree oil in the bath to heals the body's cells. After bath, generously apply Tea tree oil mixture to the body. Its aromatherapy improves the immune system and helps in fighting infections.

Can Tea Tree Oil Directly Apply to the Skin?

Tea tree oil can be directly applied to the body but it's best to mix it with a carrier oil to avoid any side effects especially for the sensitive skin.

Tea tree oil is quite beneficial in treating eczema but there is no evidence that it can also help in getting rid of eczema scars. Its purpose is to heal wounds and dryness not to fade scars.
